During my first year at the University of Colorado Boulder another PhD student and I designed and built a boost converter for undergraduate students participating in an introductory electronics lab. The lab gave freshman and sophomore students a brief introduction to many fields within electrical engineering by allowing them to design a robot. However, when I started assisting with the class there was no power electronics element to the lab. My colleague and I designed the boost converter so students could incorporate it into their designs and get some experience with power electronics.
